I’ve heard some pretty bad advice as an artist over the years and I have to say that bad advice can be way more damaging than you might think. It doesn’t help that there is so much conflicting advice for artists out there. I realize that art isn’t a science, there isn’t a qualifier for good or bad advice in a creative industry. Still, with my 8 years of experience, I heard what seems to be universally terrible advice. Even though the advice is terrible, I do see where they are coming from. After all, even the worst advice can have the best intentions. Do it for the Exposure If you’ve ever browsed through any sort of classified ads where people are trying to hire artists-you might find something a little off. The vast majority of posts online hiring artists are paying the artist in ‘exposure’. That is to say they won’t be paying you, but you might get some attention on social media for doing the work. This is really the most frustrating thing to hear as an artist. People just don’t seem to understand how long a good piece can take-and that’s not even counting the years of […]

Looking throughout the entire history of art, sometimes it seems like every idea has already been done. There is nothing new to be done looking at the whirlwind of different art styles in the 20th century, or is there? Where will art be in the future? In 5 years, in 10? No one could possibly predict the future of art with certainty, but I’m going to make a few general predictions here. Time-Based We’re used to art being static 2D images on canvas, but that is starting to change. We’re familiar with cartoons, but what if we started animating works of art? Thanks to programs like Adobe Aftereffects, time-based art is becoming more commonplace. There is a whole study dedicated to this called Motion Media Design. It is basically animating, but you usually aren’t animating characters or stories. See my example above or think of any TV intro you’ve seen in the past 5 years. It’s a really cool field and it is also my minor so I’m pretty excited to see where it goes. Augmented Reality Imagine if you are wearing Google Glass or some other type of smart lenses and you are in NYC on Easter. Suddenly, every single skyscraper […]

Ok, I want you to stop, think, and ask yourself the question “What is Art?”. Now think of the variety of art throughout all of history. Does that definition still stand? Are you starting to see holes or contradictions form when you start to think of the work of Dadaists or Minimalists compared to that of the Renaissance masters? Is art meant to be enjoyed? Matisse created his works for businessmen to come home, relax, and view the same way we might have a Netflix show running in the background today. Others argued that art was not meant to be an ‘easy chair’ for people to relax in but an intellectually challenging pastime. So is art a passive object meant to be admired or a puzzle meant to be deciphered? Does art take technical skill? I think we all know of the famous Renaissance artists Michelangelo, da Vinci, Botticelli, and Raphael. They spent their lives trying to accurately capture human anatomy in paint or sculpture. For years, one of the main goals in art was to accurately capture the life around them. Once pictures were able to capture life with perfect accuracy, artist’s job as human cameras were no longer needed. Why […]

Hello, I’m Aberleigh and this is my first blog post! I’m a student attending Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). I’m a Video Game Art major but I love making all sorts of art. I’ve always wanted to make a blog in order to share my love for art and help others learn to love it too! What I’m going to be blogging about: 1. DIY I’m always coming up with great DIY ideas but I had no way to share them until now. I’m also going to be blogging on cute mail since I love sending mail to my long-distance boyfriend. Also, I believe that ANYONE can create lovely art with a little instruction so I will be publishing some tutorials on how to do just that. 2. Art Biz I’m going to be honest-I see a lot of terrible looking banners, logos and branding on the internet. And the number one thing that screams un-professionalism to me is a badly designed website. I want to help others learn to make rockin’ designs for their business! 3. Tutorials I love teaching others how to draw. Sadly I don’t get that chance much anymore in college-but now I will have a […]
